Delores Chappell was born on March 5th in Waco, Texas; but raised in Northern California by two wonderful parents. She is the fourth oldest of six siblings.
After graduating from American Legion High School in 1974, she became a homemaker and a single parent. As her children became of school age, she went back to school in 1976 where she attended the Sacramento Skills and Business Center and completed a six month’s training course in the Nurse’s Aide Program whereby obtaining a Certificate. After working three years in the nursing field, Ms. Chappell tried her hand at something different and thus became a Supervisor working for JAM Pottery from 1979 up until 1982. Ms. Chappell decided to go back to the Sacramento Skills and Business Center in 1984 and received a Certificate in the Clerk Typist Program.
Makieba is a young girl who grew homesick after relocating from Kenya, East Africa, to the United States with her parents. She felt isolated, unhappy, and missed her friends dearly. Learning how to adapt to a new way of living was a challenge. Makieba’s mother decided to cheer her daughter up by allowing her friends from Kenya to visit her for “Makieba’s First Pajama Party”.
